New research, using ultrasound, has developed a 3-D haptic shape that can be seen and felt in mid-air.

Touch feedback technology – known as haptics – has advanced rapidly in recent years. It is now used in a range of applications including entertainment, rehabilitation and even surgical training. New research by the University of Bristol, using ultrasound, has created a virtual 3-D haptic shape that can be seen and felt in mid-air.

This breakthrough, led by Dr Ben Long and colleagues at the university's Department of Computer Science, could improve the way 3-D shapes are used and function as an important new tool in certain situations. It could enable surgeons to explore a CT scan, for example, by enabling them to actually "feel" a disease, such as a tumour.

The method uses ultrasound, focussed onto hands above the device and can be felt. By focussing complex patterns of ultrasound, the air disturbances can be seen as floating 3-D shapes. Visually, the researchers have demonstrated the ultrasound patterns by directing the device at a thin layer of oil so that the depressions in the surface can be seen as spots when lit by a lamp.

The system generates a virtual 3-D shape that can be added to 3-D displays to create a holographic effect that can be seen and felt. The research team have also shown that users can match a picture of a 3-D shape to the shape created by the system. They have already been approached by companies interested in commercialising the technology. At this early stage of development, the level of detail in the virtual objects is limited, but using a greater number of speakers at smaller sizes could improve the resolution of projections.

“Touchable holograms, immersive virtual reality that you can feel and complex touchable controls in free space, are all possible ways of using this system,” says Dr Long. “In the future, people could feel holograms of objects that would not otherwise be touchable, such as feeling the differences between materials in a CT scan or understanding the shapes of artefacts in a museum.”

The research paper is published in ACM Transactions on Graphics and is presented at this week’s SIGGRAPH Asia 2014 conference [3-6 December].

Safe Mode in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

The operating system still loads only the most basic drivers and services, so that it can display a minimal useful interface. The only important difference is that the minimum screen resolution used by Safe Mode has risen from 800x600 pixels to 1024x768 pixels.

1. Use the System Configuration Tool (msconfig.exe) - works in Windows 8 & 8.1

The easiest method for booting into Safe Mode is to use the System Configuration tool, also known as msconfig.exe.

Go to the Boot tab and, in the Boot options section check the box that says "Safe boot". Then, click or tap OK.

You are informed that you need to restart your computer. Click Restart or Exit without restartdepending on whether you want to restart now or later.

At the next restart, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 start in Safe Mode.

2. Use Shift + Restart - works in Windows 8 & 8.1

Another method is to press the Power button at the Windows login screen or in the Settingscharm. Then, press and hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click Restart.

Windows asks you to choose an option. Press Troubleshoot.

In the Troubleshoot screen, press Advanced options.

In the Advanced options screen, press Startup Settings.

You are informed that you are about to restart in order to change several Windows options, including enabling Safe Mode. Press Restart.

Your computer or device restarts again and displays nine startup settings, including Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Press the F4 key on your keyboard, to enable Safe Mode, F5 to enable Safe Mode with Networking and F6 to enable Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 now boot according to the setting you selected.

3. Boot from a System Recovery CD/DVD - works only in Windows 8

In Windows 8, but not in Windows 8.1, you can create a system recovery CD or DVD. Here's the tutorial that shows how it is done: How to Create a System Repair Disc for Windows 7 & Windows 8.

Once you have that disc created, boot from it. When asked to press any key to load its content, do so.

First, you are asked to choose your keyboard layout. Press the layout you want to use. If you want to browse through the available options, press "See more keyboard layouts" until you find the one you want to use.

Then, the Choose an option screen is shown.

From here on, the steps are identical to those shown for method 2.

4. Boot from a System Recovery Memory Stick - works in Windows 8 & 8.1

In Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 you can use the Recovery Media Creator to create a system recovery drive on a USB flash Drive. Details instructions can be found in this tutorial: How to Create a Recovery Drive on a USB Memory Stick in Windows 8 & 8.1".

Boot from the USB memory stick and follow the same instructions as in method 3.

5. Use F8 or Shift + F8 (doesn't work when using UEFI BIOS & SSDs)

In Windows 7, you were able to press F8 just before Windows got loaded, to open theAdvanced Boot Options window, where you could choose to start Windows 7 in Safe Mode.

Some websites advise you to press Shift+F8, just before Windows 8 or 8.1 starts loading so that you make it start the recovery mode, from where you can boot into Safe Mode. The problem is that, most times, Shift+F8 and F8 don't work, even though they are correct commands, supported by Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

This official blog post from Microsoft (Designing for PCs that boot faster than ever before) explains that this behavior is caused by their work in designing a very fast boot procedure. Both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have the fastest boot times ever. To quote Steve Sinofsky:

"Windows 8 has a problem – it really can boot up too quickly. So quickly, in fact, that there is no longer time for anything to interrupt boot. When you turn on a Windows 8 PC, there's no longer long enough to detect keystrokes like F2 or F8, much less time to read a message such as "Press F2 for Setup." For the first time in decades, you will no longer be able to interrupt boot and tell your PC to do anything different than what it was already expecting to do."

If you have modern PC with a UEFI BIOS and a fast SSD drive, there's no way you can interrupt the boot procedure with your keypresses. On older PCs, with a classic BIOS and no SSD drive, pressing these keys might still work though.

Step 3. So you have opened Command Prompt in Administrative Mode. Now all you need is to write the following comand in the command prompt window:

Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:G:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess

Look at the G:\ after /Source:. It is the drive letter of windows 8 installation disc. So, change it according to your Optical Drive letter.

Step 4. Now just press enter. And installation will begin without any internet connection.

   3. Now double click on lock.bat and a new folder will be created with name MyFolder

   6. Now MyFolder will be hidden from you view, to access that folde double click on lock.bat

   7. It will ask for password enter your password and done. (Default password is coolhacks)

• To change the password replace coolhacks with  new password in the above code

How To Further Secure ?

You might be thinking that anyone can access the password by opening that lock.bat file in Notepad or any other text editor. To make it more secure hide lock.bat in some secure location after following the above tutorial To access the secured file double click on lock.bat. I would suggest copying lock.bat file into Pendrive and copying it into your computer whenever you required to access to your protected files.

FAT32 (File Allocation Table) and NTFS (New Technology File System) are the types of Disk file System. FAT32 was used in DOS and Windows 98 but with the launch of Windows XP a new file system NTFS was introduced which is used widely because it provides high security and better performance.

NTFS vs FAT32

NTFS creates the sectors in counting of 4, Suppose File size is 18, it will create 5 sectors (4,4,4,4,2).It means that only 2 sectors will be lost. But in case of FAT32 it creates sector in counting of 16 so for file size 18, it will create two sectors (16,2) it means 14 sectors will be lost and this will effects your transfer rate. You can convert FAT32 to NTFS and vice versa. Here is the step by step tutorial to convert FAT32 to NTFS.

HOW DO YOU CONVERT FAT32 TO NTFS FILE SYSTEM WITHOUT LOOSING DATA

Open Window Explorer and memorize the drive letter of which you want to convert file system.

In search bar type CMD and right click on it, Select Run as Administrator.

Now Run “chkdsk G: /f” (without quotes) here G is the drive letter. This checks the drive for errors and fixes them automatically.

Run Convert G: /FS:NTFS

Wait for some time, then a message will display on the command prompt stating Conversion Complete

3. When this hosts file is opened in Notepad, at the end of the file you will see something like “127.0.0.1 localhost”.

4. Under “127.0.0.1localhost” just add another website URL that you want to block. Example 127.0.0.1localhost 127.0.0.2 www.amazon.com 127.0.0.3 www.facebook.com

Now try to visit the site you just added with your browser and watch what happens.

Tip: Remember that you can always disable it by deleting the site you input.

Disable Start Screen in individual Office Application

In each Office Application, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, there is a quick option that you can use to turn on and off Start Screen. 

Simply open the application you want to disable the Start Screen, 

Click Open Other Documents at the bottom of the sidebar screen, and go to Options.

In the Options screen, look for  “Show the Start screen when this application starts” at the bottom of the General section. Unchecking it will disable the Start Screen in this specific application.

How To disable in All Office Applications at Once

The steps described above only disable the Start Screen in individual Office applications, which means that disabling it in Word will not disable it in Excel automatically. 

You can only do that through a registry tweak. 

1. Open Registry Editor . Click start button and type regedit on the search box

2. Navigator to the following registry key.

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General

3. Create a new DWORD 32 registry key in the right-side panel, name it 

                      DisableBootToOfficeStart 

and then double click it set value to 1.

Thats it . 

The change may take effect right after you set the registry tweak . Now when you start  any Office application you wont be seeing the start up screen .
